Pac-10 May Also Add Schools
December 17, 2009
Follow the Big 10′s lead, the Pac-10 also announced they would be undergoing some considerations for adding another team to their 10-team roster. This is a conference that clearly doesn’t want to get left behind. If the Big 10 adds another school, moving their total teams to 12, the Pac-10 starts to look smaller and smaller, and nobody associated with the conference wants that.
Speculation is already taking over about which teams might join the conference. The names heard most frequently are Utah, Boise State, BYU, San Diego State, Colorado, Fresno State, Nevada, UNLV and TCU.
Of those teams, Boise State probably makes the most sense for both sides. The Pac-10 would get another nationally-respected name on their list and Boise State would get a chance to compete all season long against much better talent, something they have been criticized for in the past in both basketball and football.
The story probably won’t end with the Big 10 and the Pac-10. In the big business of college sports no conference wants to be left behind. If these two conferences are talking about expansion, you can bet the Big East will also be looking to add some teams to their lineup.
I think expansion is a great move of any or all of the conferences, particularly if they can get enough teams to split like the ACC, Big 12, and SEC (among others) already do so they can all hold a conference championship during the football season.
