Merril’s Clemson at Butler Picks
November 29, 2009
Yet another winner for Steve Merril and his clients last night as he took Butler over Clemson. Take a look at the analysis he posted on this game below, to just show you how good he felt about the college basketball spreads, especially right here on this game:
Butler hasn’t played as well as they can during the 76 Classic tournament. But after sub-par efforts against Minnesota and UCLA, the Bulldogs will bounce back and play their best game of the tournament tonight against Clemson. And there are a couple of reasons for that.
In the first two tournament games, Butler faced two teams that play good defense. Minnesota is one of the better defensive teams in the country, and UCLA is a defensive-minded team under head coach Ben Howland. Butler’s offense suffered in both of those games as they shot just 33.3% against Minnesota and 39.6% against UCLA. And the reason for that is the pace of those games. Like Butler, those teams would rather grind in a half-court game. And when facing a similar style, it’s a lot harder for Butler to dictate their offensive sets.
But tonight, they’ll face fast-paced Clemson out of the ACC; a conference known for their break neck speed and shoddy defense. Butler will be able to impose their style and force Clemson into a half-court grinder which is definitely not the way Clemson wants to play. When forced into a slow pace, Clemson has shown no ability to win games. Texas A&M beat them while holding them to 60 points a few nights ago. In fact, when held to 70 points or less, Clemson is just 3-6 their last 9 dating back to last season.
