Last season was the year Auburn basketball was supposed to make a run at the postseason. It was head coach Jeff Lebo’s fourth season and he had a great mix of veterans and youngsters but injuries, most notably the broken hand that cost leading scorer Korvotney Barber the final 20 games, left Auburn lacking bodies, playing with six or seven scholarship players at times. This season the Tigers bring back three starters and bring in a solid class of JUCO transfers to make an immediate impact.
Barber is back and healthy while guards Quantez Robertson and Rasheem Barrett have 224 career starts between them and combined for 35.2 ppg and 15.9 rpg last season. Barrett is listed as questionable with a slight groin pull but word is that he is ready to go. The JUCO transfers are led by guard Tay Waller who is a solid shooter and forward Johnnie Lett. Waller and Lett both transferred from Okaloosa-Walton College in Florida so they already have good chemistry together.
Missouri St. is in a major rebuilding year. Head coach Barry Stinson was let go despite a very successful tenure with the Bears and in comes new head man Cuonzo Martin. The cupboard isn’t bare but it is lacking. Forward Chris Cooks is the returning leading scoring at just 8.6 ppg and he is the only veteran frontcourt player. The backcourt is the strength but not tonight. Projected starters Justin Fuehrmeyer and Shane Laurie are injured and depth is going to be a huge concern.
The Tigers won their only exhibition 98-50 last week against Division II Morehouse. Waller made seven three-pointers and scored a game-high 27 points while Robertson had 19 points and 10 rebounds. Auburn is 50-8 in home season openers, and had won nine in a row overall until losing last year to Tulane. There are simply too many athletes on this Tigers team for the Bears to keep this one close. This is a great number as the line should easily be in double-digits. 5* Auburn Tigers
